HOGAN - The Most Rev. James J., DD, JCD, age 93, of Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, Pa., died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at the manor, after an extended illness. Bishop Hogan was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Oct. 17, 1911, the son of the late James F. and Mary E. (Molloy) Hogan. He was bishop emeritus of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese since 1987. Bishop Hogan graduated in 1929 from Camden Catholic High School, Camden, N.J.; St. Charles and St. Mary's seminaries, Baltimore, Md.; North American College, Rome, Italy; and received a doctorate in canon law from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. Bishop Hogan was ordained as a priest at North American College, Rome, Italy, on Dec. 8, 1937. He was consecrated as a bishop, Feb. 25, 1960, at St. Mary's Cathedral, Trenton, N.J., and became the first auxiliary bishop of the Trenton Diocese, where he served until 1966. He was named Bishop of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese on May 23, 1966, succeeding the Most Rev. J. Carroll McCormick. He became diocesan bishop of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese on July 6, 1966, and served until 1986. He was the diocesan administrator from 1986 to 1987. Bishop Hogan was a founding member of the Institute of Religious Life, Chicago, and a member of Third Order of Carmel. He is survived by a sister, Jean Scott, Northfield, N.J., and 24 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and John Hogan, and three sisters, Dolores, Margaret and Elizabeth. A funeral Mass will be held at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, Pa., at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2005, with Justin Cardinal Regali, metropolitan archbishop of Philadelphia, officiating. The Most Rev. Joseph V. Adamec will be homilist. Committal rites will be held at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament-Crypt, Altoona, Pa. Friends received Monday, June 20, 2005, from 3 to 9 p.m.; Tuesday, June 21, 2005, from 1 to 9 p.m.; and Wednesday, June 22, 2005, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. A vigil for the deceased will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home, Altoona.
