Obituary of Martin W. Bender

BENDER - Martin W., Sr., 69 of Ebensburg, passed away November 20, 2012 at Altoona Regional Health System – Altoona Hospital. Born May 23, 1943 in Patton, son of the late Harry and Catherine (Link) Bender. Survived by wife, the former Agnes Weakland, to whom he was married 48 years, and these children: Martin Jr., married to the former Jacqueline Sloan, Johnstown; and Christine Bender, Ebensburg. Also survived by grandson William “Billy” Bender, Johnstown; mother-in-law, Inez Weakland, formerly of Carrolltown; brothers: Richard (Nancy) Bender, and Regis (Carol) Bender, both of Johnstown; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Martin was retired from Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Franklin Plant and a member of the United Steelworkers Union. A member of Holy Name Roman Catholic Church and Ebensburg Council #522 Knights of Columbus. Martin enjoyed woodworking and camping at Raystown and Glendale Lakes. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg, where a Knights of Columbus Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. and a vigil prayer service will also be held. Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at Holy Name Church, the Rev. Msgr. Arnold L. Gaus, celebrant. Entombment at Holy Name Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice or to Martin’s family.
