Lucille graduated from Spangler High School in 1938. She received a scholarship to Seton Hill College, where she attended for one year before transferring and receiving her bachelor of science degree in education from Indiana State Teachers College in 1942. She began her teaching career at Spangler Elementary School. She later was certified in special education, was an activities director at the Ebensburg State School, and taught at elementary schools in Woodvale and Vinco before retiring from Intermediate Unit 8. She was dedicated to her faith and service to Holy Name Catholic Church, where she attended Mass almost daily, was a member of Catholic Daughters of America and volunteered for countless events and committees over more than six decades. Lucille never had an unkind word for anyone. She loved well and lived well a long life of humble and selfless caring for family, for neighbors and for others. She left all who knew her feeling privileged to have her in their lives. She was active and independent even in her 94th year. After breaking a hip on Feb. 28, 2015, surgery and working hard at successful therapy, she suffered kidney failure. With complete confidence and ready to journey to the next life, she made her decision on April 1 to return to her home to spend her final days in hospice care by her loving children. This time allowed her to say her goodbyes to many of her friends and family members. She passed away in her sleep, in peace and contentment on April 8, accompanied by family. Her outlook on death was as much of an example as was her outlook on life. She particularly wanted to thank the staff and doctors at Crichton Rehabilitation Center who were so friendly and attentive to her. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Matevish and Matevish Funeral Home, Ebensburg, where a vigil wake service will be held Sunday evening.
