Obituary of David Harold Johns

JOHNS – David Harold, 69, of Nicktown, went to be with his Lord June 5, 2018 at the VA Heinz Campus, Pittsburgh. Born August 20, 1948, the first of four children born to Harold and Shirley (Roles) Johns. David graduated from the former blacklick Twp. High School in 1966 and the Pittsburgh Technical School in the field of Electronics. He served in the US Army from 1969 to 1971 with a tour in Vietnam, serving the 18th First Infantry Division as an expert marksman (M-16 Rifle) and was the recipient of a Bronze Star Medal with Valor. Dave’s love for sports as a participant or a spectator was one of his passions. Golf trips to Hilton Head and camping in the mountains with his friends also brought him great joy. He worked 23 years in the coal industry, retiring from BethEnergy Mines in Ebensburg. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nanty Glo and attended the Ebensburg Evangelical Bible Church. He loved his Lord and served in whatever capacity he could to help others. Also a member of the Twin Rocks VFW Post 7605 where he served as a Ritualist for his fellow veterans. David married his devoted wife Carolyn (Stiles) Johns on June 24, 1972 and would have celebrated his 46th wedding anniversary in a few weeks. His sons, David, of Altoona and Adam, of Nicktown, as well as his nephew, J.J. Zimmerman, who he raised as his son, will remember their dad as a fun loving, hardworking father whose greatest joy was spending time with his family and his fur baby Harley. Also surviving are his sister Barbara (Richard) Kinter and their children Lisa, Denise and Rick; his brother, Ron (Tina) Johns and their children Jamie & Emily; brother-in-law Ken (Lisa) Miller and Ken’s children Mindy & Bryan; his in-laws: Linda Toy and her companion William Filler and Linda’s daughter Tracy Zimmerman; Sharon Edwards, and her children Nathan & Nicole; Fred (Betty) Stiles, and Betty’s son Justin; Janet McQuay and her companion Mark Langer and Janet’s son, Daniel McQuay; and Sandra (Brian) Albright. David will be missed by his childhood friends who he enjoyed spending time with: Eugene Lanzendorfer, Jim Lewis and John Behory. David was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Naomi Miller, niece Amy Lou Kinter, mother and father-in-law Betty & Fred Stiles, brothers-in-law: Alvie J. Toy and Dan McQuay. At his request there will be no visitation or viewing. Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m., until the time of Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the EEB Church, 130 Belair Street, Revloc, Pa. 15948, Pastor Marvin Lowery, officiating. Interment in the privately owned cemetery on the family farm. Military Ritual will be held by the Nanty Glo, Vintondale, & Twin Rocks veteran’s organizations at the opening of the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to Dave’s church (address above) or the VA’s “Fisher House” 3199 Brackenridge Street, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15219. Arrangements are in the care of the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg.
