Obituary of Jane A. Smithmyer

SMITHMYER - Jane A. (Schnaubelt), 71, of Ebensburg, passed away January 26th, 2019, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1947 in Altoona, daughter of the late Anthony F. and Alice (Hammond) Schnaubelt. Preceeded in death by parents, and brother Tony Jr.. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Ron Smithmyer, and children: Brian (Jody Gibney) of Mechanicsburg; Angela (DJ) Lambing of Mundy’s Corner; and Sheila (Rob) McKeta of Jeffersonville; grandsons: Corey and Andrew Smithmyer; Caleb & Wyatt Lambing; Taylor and Josh McKeta. Also survived by her sister Mary (Barry) Leininger; brother, Ed (Patti) Schnaubelt; sister-in-law, Doreen (Dave) Beck, brothers-in-law, Dave (Vicki) Smithmyer and Steve (Cindy) Smithmyer as well as numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. When she was in the second grade, Jane knew she wanted to be a teacher. She taught mostly elementary students, where fourth graders held a special place in her heart. While she and her husband lived in Cresson, they were members of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and helped to establish the “Church for Children” program, and was active on many committees and church functions. Jane also enjoyed working the annual Cresson Fireman’s Festival for many years. When she and her family moved to Ebensburg, she became involved in various community and church events, including Holy Name Parish Festival, the CCD program, and the Bishop Carroll Athletic Boosters. She served as the treasurer for the Catholic Daughters of the America’s Court 680, Ebensburg. After her retirement, Jane was a substitute teacher in the Central Cambria District and at Holy Name Elementary, until she was diagnosed with cancer. During her free time, she enjoyed time with her family while camping and traveling, spending the winters in Florida with her husband, reading and playing games online at “Pogo”. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sbeitan and the staff at the Conemaugh Cancer Center and Grane Hospice for their excellent care. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg, where a vigil prayer service will be held. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at Holy Name Church, Msgr. David Lockard, celebrant. Interment at Holy Name Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital for she sponsored fund raising events during her teaching career. Donations may also be made to the American Cancer Society in Jane’s memory.
