Obituary of Daryl James Hessler

HESSLER – Daryl James, 69, of Johnstown, died peacefully August 14, 2022 at Amber Springs, Johnstown. Born August 29, 1952 in Johnstown, son of the late Walter P. and Mary Ann Hessler. Preceded in death by wives, Judith (Fry) Gillen and Helen (Miller); companion, Melodee (Guy); son, Robert Hessler; brother, Walter J.; niece, Renee Harris; and nephew, Brian Kysar. Survived by children, Heather (Bill) Naugle; and Matthew (Sally) Hessler; and daughter in law, Kelly Hessler. Grandchildren, Jacob, Payton, Zachary, Nathan and Kaitlin. Step son, Matthew (Brooke) Miller; and several step grandchildren. Also survived by sisters, Sharon Hessler Kysar and Deborah (John) Ondrejko; brother, David (Debi) Hessler; and numerous nieces and nephews. Daryl was a 1970 graduate of Bishop Carroll High School, Ebensburg. He then worked at Bethlehem Steel Mills and Bethlehem Coal Mines #32. Over the course of his life, he also worked in various areas of construction that included roofing and bricklaying. He was a longtime member of the Bricklayers Union Local #910. Daryl’s antics were legendary and those that knew him have many stories to tell. He was the best story teller…one could sit for hours listening to his stories from the past while enjoying a shot of bourbon and a beer with him. Daryl loved life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed playing Duckpin bowling. He was a member of Austrian Hall, Conemaugh and Woodvale Olympic Club. We would like to thank the caregivers of Amber Springs, Daryl’s home for the last two years. Daryl loved being at Amber Springs and all his caregivers have our thanks for the exceptional care they gave to Daryl. As per Daryl’s wishes, there will be no viewing. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11 a.m. until time of memorial service at noon on Tuesday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Nanty Glo, the Rev. Leonard Voytek, officiating.
